After leaving Hemel Hempstead Grammar School, David Brooks joined Thorn Electrical Industries Limited as a student apprentice, reading for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, through a four year sandwich course at Aston University. He combined work placements in Thorn’s various consumer electronics and lighting factories and laboratories whilst simultaneously being involved with student politics as University Vice-President of Aston’s Guild of Students. 

After graduation he was seconded to participate in a research team at the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College, London. Further studies at the South Bank Polytechnic resulted in a Diploma in Illuminating Engineering and later a Diploma in Management Studies with distinction in Marketing, from the Slough College of Technology where he later worked as a visiting lecturer in Marketing. He is a Chartered Electrical Engineer, a Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers and has spent much of his working career in various marketing roles. These included product management and marketing management with Thorn Lighting Limited and as Marketing Director of The Rank Organisation’s Strand Lighting subsidiary with responsibility for global marketing. During his career he has presented papers at a number of lighting conferences both in the United Kingdom and the USA. In a change of career direction he joined a specialist business-to-business full service advertising and marketing communications agency where in his role as Account Planning Director he has worked with several global industrial companies as well as smaller specialist engineering and service organisations. In 1999 he joined forces with Andy Collier to set up the Internet based specialist company - Technical Marketing Limited.
